Today at 87, I Love Growing Old

Today, May 27, 2011, I am 87 years young/old. Why? Because this day is the oldest I’ve ever been, yet the youngest I’ll ever be, and therefore, wholeheartedly, I say: “O Lord who lends me life, please lend me a heart replete with thankfulness. For the many great favors, graces and blessings you have bestowed on me, I offer up my sincere thanks to you, Almighty God.”

Yes, I am old and I’ll enjoy this day while it lasts as well as the other more days to come. My idea is this: One doesn’t stop laughing because he/she grows old, but he/she grows old because he/she stops laughing, don’t you think so?

Now, please permit me to relay some observations I have made in my growing old and I’m sure, or maybe you will laugh as I did.

. . . . . Traveling or going out is good, but coming home is better.
. . . . . When people say ‘you look great,’ they add ‘for you age.’
. . . . . You realize you’re never to be good at anything, especially in softball or baseball.
. . . . . Your housemates are counting on you to remember the things you don’t remember.
. . . . . The things you used to do, you no longer care to do them anymore.
. . . . . When you needed discounts in the earlier days, you had to pay full prices always. Now, you get discounts on everything: clothes, meals, movies, flights and many more, but you seldom have the chance to use them.

We still have more to add to this list, but I just mentioned a few. Did you smile/laugh or enjoy what I just enumerated?

But there are some good old things: old songs, old movies and most especially old friends.

And now, may I call on everybody “Come and grow old with me. The best is yet to come. Spread the laughter; share the charm and let’s be happy while we are here.”
