Tango: A World Cultural Treasure

tangoWho does not know or has not even heard of tango? Of course, not everybody knows how to dance the tango, but must have heard of this graceful and beautiful dance.

Tango is an elegant and slow dance, the pauses of which are as important as its movement. It has often been referred to as a “dance of feeling.”

Four hundred experts of the United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held a meeting in Abu Dhabi to decide on a list of world arts and traditions that should be safeguarded as humanity’s cultural heritage.

On Wednesday, September 30, 2009, tango has been declared by the United Nations as a world cultural treasure. The lyrics of the song and the dance steps have been added to UNESCO’s heritage list. Tango’s lyrics tell of heartache and homesickness, of family ties and life in the city suburbs.

In Argentina and Uruguay, tango is a proud and deep-rooted tradition of dance, poetry and song. It has been closely bound up with the history of the region and kept alive by aficionados, both young and old.

The two Latin American capitals jointly submitted the “symbolic universe” of tango to UNESCO’s list of cultural treasures.

It was the first of 76 submissions examined and approved by the Abu Dhabi meeting.

UNESCO said that tango embodies and encourages diversity and cultural dialogue.

Argentina and Uruguay had “shared in the birth, the tradition and the passion for tango, but the dance had a long time ago reached “universal transcendence.”
