It was a traditional Filipino wedding – ninongs and ninangs, maid of honor and best man, the groomsmen and the bridesmaids, candle sponsors, veil sponsors and cord sponsors, the ring bearer and the flower girl.

The ninongs and the ninangs entered first, followed by the secondary sponsors, the bridesmaids, the groomsmen, the maid of honor and the best man… a flurry of hellos drowning out the conversations. Then Allyn and Nina arrived; everyone stood up, everyone was smiling and clapping their hands. The wedding party had begun.

The usual suspects danced with the bride and groom and what made this very interesting is the “gala” (pronounced gah-lah) wherein guests pin money to the bride and groom while they are dancing. In Cavinti, that is usually what people do instead of buying wedding gifts. It was good to see this tradition being followed though we are thousands of miles away from the Philippines.

It felt as if the night would not end, but all good things do. Then it was time to say goodbye to Allyn and Nina before they left for their honeymoon.

It’s a big leap from Irving Penn to Allyn and Nina’s wedding. But, I thought a historical tidbit would be a good read. We all love Allyn and Nina and its just nice to share something that trivial just as this to make them smile for the cameras once more.

There were so many more interesting places to visit in the US Capital but due to limited time, we simply made brief stops (for another rounds of photo-ops again) at the imposing marble Lincoln Memorial building, War Memorial; and passed by the historic Thomas Jefferson Memorial building across the Potomac River before retiring at the Holiday Inn for the evening.

New York City is eclectic and intoxicatingly vibrant; its allure is so overwhelming. The person who coined up the catchy slogan “I Love New York” must be a genius.

Following our boat cruise on the Hudson (which offered us a magnificent, perfect post-card view of Manhattan’s skyline and the Statue of Liberty), six among us (me included) opted for a free time on our own instead of joining the rest of the group who visited such attractions as the Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum and the Top of the Rock.

Finally, our almost 10-hour journey (including of course several stops at rest areas along the way) took us to our first destination: Boston, state capital of Massachusetts, home of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and the Boston Bruins. But most notably, Boston was the birthplace of Benjamin Franklin; inventor, scientist and one of the original framers of the US constitution.

As we share our meal, the biblical Miracle of Loaves and Fishes as mentioned in the four canonical Gospels (Matthew 14:13–21, Mark 6:31-44, Luke 9:10-17 and John 6:5-15) came to mind.

Last Saturday, August 8th, as lunch time neared, Cavintinians arrived en masse at Furman Park. Though most of us see each other regularly, there are also a lot whom the only time we socialize with is during the fiesta celebration. Such is the bond that the Transfiguration holds among all of us. We might be busy the whole year; but we always find time to break bread with our kababayans to celebrate our town fiesta.
