It Takes a Global Village…

Tonight, while watching a rerun of one of my favorite shows, “Legend of the Seeker” reminded me that the days of seeing it on television is numbered. The show has been cancelled by ABC due to low ratings.

But, fans like me have not given up. In fact, there are several websites dedicated to it – www.LegendoftheSeeker.org  and www.SaveOurSeeker.com . Both are working in tandem to ask the studios from ABC, NBC, CBS, TNT, FOX, even Direct TV and ION to produce season 3 of Legend of the Seeker.

There are even two FACEBOOK pages dedicated to it: http://www.facebook.com/LegendoftheSeeker  and http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=269657990457&v=app_2373072738

And, if you go to YouTube, you will find several fan made videos asking the same thing – Save the Seeker.

There are several things that make this campaign interesting and we, as Cavinti diasporas can learn from these dedicated fans. First, the fans are scattered all over the world! And I mean all over, spanning all 5 continents – North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Africa.

These people have one common interest – they are all fans of Legends of the Seeker. And just a tidbit, there are so many Filipinos (living in the Philippines and not diasporas) are fans of the show. In fact, in a Google trending page, on top of ten searches of Legend of the Seeker is from the Philippines.

Second, the group has raised via Paypal over US$20,000 to fund the campaign to save the show. I do not know the exact amounts but about $9000 was spent for an ad at Variety, a Hollywood trade newspaper saying “Save the Seeker” and the rest is being used to buy DVDs of the first season of Legend of the Seeker to be distributed to libraries to increase awareness about the show.

Third and most important, no one is getting paid for this. Everyone is working for a common goal simply because they believe in the cause and they are fans of the show.

As a fan, the Legend of the Seeker is not the first time that I have joined a cause to save my favorite show. My first one was Star Trek Deep Space Nine. The now defunct UPN was going to cancel the show only after five seasons.

Star Trek fans all over the world asked UPN and Viacom (owner of the Star Trek franchise) to run the show for a seventh season. They listened, and we got two more seasons of Star Trek Deep Space Nine before it was cancelled.

It has been a long time for me and it really feels good to be part of something global once again. And then I realized that over here at Tipakan.com, we are also a global village of Cavintinians. And yes, it takes a global village to make this website what it is today.

I remember creating this site in April 2008 as a Mother’s Day gift. I do not remember why I chose to get a domain name and a web server for my Mother instead of buying a gift. I’m glad I did!
