Give Help Whenever Possible

One day, sometime in June, 2009, my daughter called me from the doorway. She has been out to take our dog Sara for a walk. “Nanay,” she said, “please unleash Sara. I will go to the old woman. She needs some help.”

Without much ado, I went to the doorway to take the leash off Sara. I saw my daughter in a hurry going to a house in the neighborhood. I closed the door and Sara and I went inside the house.

A few minutes later, my daughter was home. “Mary, a 79-year old woman saw Sara and me on our way back to the house,” she began. “She called me and requested me to do an errand for her so I told her I’ll take Sara home and will be back immediately. On my return, she handed me a key, the key to her mailbox that was several steps away from her door and asked me to get her mail. She has to go down a few steps of a stairway and she could not go down the stair. She told me that she always watches for a passer-by who she calls for the purpose. I felt sorry for her and I volunteered to go to her house daily to get her mail. Besides, I told her that she can call me anytime if she has some errands to do, and for that, she was very thankful.”

“That is very appreciative of you, volunteering to give a helping hand to an old woman. Everyday, we have the opportunity to do something good whenever we can and wherever we are. Those little bits of good put together overwhelm the world,” I concluded.
