Four RP Spots in Top Ten of New Seven Wonders

PhilippinesFour famous tourist spots in the Philippines are included in the new top 10 list of  “Seven Wonders of the World,” according to  ABS-CBN News on June 9, 2008, to  wit:

  • Tubbataha Reef in Palawan – second on the top list 

          Tubbataha is known as the most beautiful coral reef in the world. It is renowned for being a refuge for more than one thousand species of marine life and a bird sanctuary as well. It has been declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a World Heritage Site.

  •  Chocolate Hills in Bohol – fourth on the top ten list

            The Chocolate Hills  is an unusual geological formation in Bohol. It is composed of around  1,268 perfectly cone-shaped  hills of about the same size. It is spread on an area of approximately 19 square miles (50 sq. km,). They are covered in green grass that turns brown during the hot season.

  • Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park – sixth on the top ten list

           This park features a spectacular limestone karat landscape with an underground river. It emerges directly into the sea and its lower portion is subject to tidal influences. The area is a significant habitat for biodiversity conservation.  It contains a full “mountain-to-sea” ecosystem and has some of the most important forests in Asia.     

  • Mayon Volcano – tenth in the top ten list

          Mayon Volcano is known as a “Perfect Cone Volcano” because  it is perfect cone-shaped. It is also the most active volcano in the Philippines. Since 1616, it has erupted 47 times.

 The New Seven Wonders Foundation organized the online polls. One hundred million votes were cast. A list of 77 nominees will be made, then will be narrowed  down to 21 finalists that will be put to  a  “popular vote.” The results will determine the new set of  “Seven Wonders of the World.”
