First Solar-Powered Phone Goes On Display

The world’s first solar-powered phone was displayed by Samsung at an industry show in Barcelona, Spain on Monday, February 16, 2009. The manufacturer believes that this type of phone would be of great advantage to people who work long hours outside and do not have electricity in their place of work.

The solar-powered phone can be fully charged in the sun for ten to fourteen hours. It can, then, be used in communicating for four hours. It may also be plugged in to charge to extend its power by using the solar panels to top up the battery.

Samsung plans to launch the phone initially in Europe in mid 2009, although it is believed that the price range would be unaffordable for most workers in developing countries. But people have been so used to having mobile phones because it is a necessity, so it is hoped that they will do their best to acquire one in spite of the financial crisis.
