Filipinos Fight to Get Their Church Back

More than a dozen parishioners protested the sale of St. Aedan’s Catholic Church to St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, New Jersey last Saturday.
The church’s more than 800 family members are mostly Filipinos. On March 21, the church was taken over by St. Peter’s college in a multi-year lease deal.
Church officials say they allowed the take over because it’s an opportunity for the Jesuit school to expand its reach in the community.
But Filipino parishioners say they were not even consulted about the sale. They are protesting the take over because this could mean the end of long standing Filipino traditions celebrated at St. Aedan’s Catholic Church.
Parishioners say, their Saturday protest is only the first of a series of protests to take their church back.
Parishioner, Naty Caballero said,”They are trying to assure us that everything will remain the same but knowing the Filipinos with our devotions, our practices, our Simbang Gabi, our novenas, our Sto. Nino devotions this will not happen anymore.”
