Filipino Highschoolers Awarde in Las Vegas Mathematics Contest

Three Filipino high school students  gave pride to the Philippines when they won in the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) Top Scorer Awards  held last May 30-31, 2008 in the University of Las Vegas, Nevada, according to a press release of ABS-CBN News.

The three Filipino students who received the ARML Top Scorer Awards are Carmela Antoinette Lao of  St. Jude Catholic School, Gabrielle Angela Santos of Philippine Science High School – Main campus and Fred Nyll Tupas of Philippine Science High School – Western Visayas campus. The three received gold ARML International gold medals.

The Philippine delegation is composed of two teams – Philippines A and Philippines B with 15 students each  as members.

The Philippine teams competed against 125 national and international teams in both Divisions A and B. The other international teams who participated included Hong Kong, Taiwan, Colombia and Canada.

Rechilda Villame, vice president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild (MTG) – Philippines,  accompanied the contestants. 

Villame was presented an inscribed plaque for the Samuel L. Greitzer Distinguished Coach Award.  She is the only coach awardee this year.
