Far East 1521: A Cavintinian E-commerce site

fareast1521Far East 1521 seems like an odd name for an online store that sells golf tees, hoodies and baseball caps. But, if you are from the Philippines, the year 1521 rings a bell; that’s when Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines. Far East of course is self-explanatory.

The brainchild of Glenn Mendez, a first generation Cavinti diaspora and the son of Calixto and Nena (nee Conde) Mendez, www.fareast1521.com  is a young entrepreneur’s foray in e-commerce.

Far East 1521 is a far cry from Amazon.com, but it does not have VC money either; which means that like most small businesses in the U.S., the capitalization, the idea and all the hard work comes from its founder, Glenn Mendez.

I remember Glenn as a child of 5 in Cavinti. They lived in Cailles St. while we lived in Bonifacio St. which makes us practically neighbors. He calls me Tiya (aunt) because we belong to the same Conde family tree.

I missed out on his growing up years because both our families moved to different parts of the U.S. I keep in touch with Nena, Glenn’s mother via weekly phone calls. Like all mothers, we talk about our children. That’s how I know what Glenn has been up to.

In a New Year’s greetings email, Glenn sent me a link to www.fareast1521.com . I was curious what it was; then was pleasantly surprised that it is an online store! And, I was so proud; am still proud up to now.

In this high tech world, Cavintinians might be scattered all over the world. But with emails, Facebook, Twitter and Flickr plus phone calls and text messaging, we keep in touch.

And now, one of us even has their own e-commerce store! Now, we have an online shopping destination – www.fareast1521.com
