Dr Fred Mejilla Named 2007 Person of the Year by Filipino Life Magazine
Dr Fred Mejilla of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada was named 2007 Person of the Year by Filipino Life, a Toronto-based magazine devoted to the Filipino cultural community in Canada and around the world. Dr Fred Mejilla has been a practicing chiropractor in the Toronto area for the past 14 years.
The son of Carlito and Minerva Mejilla, Dr. Fred is the youngest of four children. A first generation Cavinti diaspora, he immigrated to St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada with his whole family when he was 12. He graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a degree in Biochemistry and continued on at Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa for his Doctor of Chiropractic degree.
A generous man, Dr Fred is actively involved with Gawad Kalinga, an alternative solution to the blatant problem of poverty not just in the Philippines but also in the world. Translated into English, Gawad Kalinga means “to give care” and its vision for the Philippines is a slum-free, squatter-free nation through a simple strategy of providing land for the landless, homes for the homeless, food for the hungry and as a result providing dignity and peace for every Filipino.
His other charity work includes Children’s Make-A-Wish Foundation, and CASAMA, the Cavinti Sama-Samang Magtulungan, an organization of Cavintinians that is committed in the promotion and preservation of our values, culture and history.
