Dr. Eddie Flores: Nov 10 1936 – Jan 13 2009

I remember Dr. Eddie Flores very well. When I was a child of barely 5 years old, I was bitten by a dog. It was a time when doctors still made house visits. And because my parents were his good friends, Dr. Eddie, as he was fondly called came to my rescue.

I was very scared. It was a time when a dog bite meant 25 injections in your spine to avoid rabies infection. Ouch! It was so traumatic for me, that even though I am already middle-aged, I still remember how painful it was. But, I also remember how kind Dr. Eddie was. In today’s medical lingo, he has good bedside manners.

Dr. Eddie gave me the first of the 25 shots I had to undergo. He was so kind and gentle to me for the first injection that I willingly did the remaining 24, sometimes even going to the Health Center on my own, where Dr. Eddie was also the attending physician.

It had been a long time since then. As an adult, my only communication with Dr. Eddie Flores was secondhand. Through CLOTA, wherein Dr. Eddie and my mother Lucila Oblena are both members, I would get bits and pieces of news about him – how his family is doing, how successful his children are and new additions to the family.

So today, when my mother told me of Dr. Eddie’s passing, I was shocked. Dr. Eddie Flores died of complications of pancreatic cancer at 11:00 PM Pacific Time on January 13, 2009. He had a long battle with pancreatic cancer which was diagnosed over 18 months ago. He passed away comfortably in his home in Redwood City, CA with his four daughters, wife, and sister by his side.

Please include him and his bereaved family in our prayers
