Dominador L. Cabuhat Passes Away at 89

DALLAS, May 9, 2011/ — Dominador L. Cabuhat, Founder of Cavinti Academy, Mayor of Cavinti, Laguna for over two decades and Board Member of the Province of Laguna passed away at 89 at 4:20 in the morning at the Centennial Medical Center in Frisco, a suburb of Dallas, Texas.

He is survived by his wife Gina Cabuhat, his four daughters – Suena Conde and Rhodora Cabusi, both of Perth, Australia and Jerlene Aranguren and Doris Villanueva, both of Plano, Texas, sons-in-law and grandchildren.

A native of Cavinti, Laguna, Dominador de Leon Cabuhat was born on November 5, 1921 spending his formative years in his hometown wherein he  studied at Cavinti Elementary School. Studying in Malate Catholic School in Manila (1935-1937) for part of his high school, he earned his high school diploma from Laguna High School in Sta. Cruz in 1940.

Pursuing his higher education, he studied at Gregg Business College from 1941-1942 but was forced to stop because of the outbreak of World War II. Serving his country in its time of need, Dominador Cabuhat enlisted in the army and became part of G Company III Army Cor11ps, FAIT (Fil-American Irregular Troops) David’s Command.

After the war, he continued his studies and enrolled at the Union College of Laguna where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1950 and subsequently his Masters of Arts degree from the Union College of Manila in 1953.

A man with a vision, Dominador Cabuhat founded the CAVINTI ACADEMY in 1950, becoming the first ever private school in the town of Cavinti and also the first high school.

His success as an educator was followed by a highly successful political career. He ran for Cavinti Mayor in 1964 and he held that office until 1980 when he voluntarily retired undefeated. He then ran and subsequently was elected as a Member of the Laguna Provincial Board in 1980. He held that office until 1986. Again, he voluntarily retired from that position, choosing not to run for another term to lead the life of a private citizen.

After his public life, Dominador Cabuhat, together with his wife Gina joined their two daughters Jerlene Cabuhat Aranguren and Doris Cabuhat Villanueva here in the U.S., dividing their time between Plano, Texas where Jerlene lives and New Jersey, were Doris lived.

Two years ago, Doris and her husband Celso Villanueva moved to Plano, Texas and Dominador & Gina Cabuhat made Texas their home.
