The Department of Education Employes Union (DepEdEU) has appealed to President Arroyo to appoint an insider as the next education secretary in the event that Secretary Jesli A. Lapus will resign next month to run for the senate.
Atty. Domingo Alidon, DepEdEU president and the resource speaker during the recently concluded national convention of Administrative Officers Association of the Department of Education (AOADE) at the Teachers Camp, said that while the organization members, coming from more than 200 provincial and city schools divisions in 17 regions, respect the prerogative of the Chief Executive to select and appoint members of her Cabinet, it is to the great benefit of the country’s public school system if a real educator, preferably an insider, would succeed Lapuz in the DepEd top post.
Alidon furthr stated that the union has recommended three legitimate long time education executives to replace the former Tarlac legislator and Land Bank of the Philippines executive after he shall have filed his certificate of candidacy for senator, to wit:
Dr. Vilma Labrador, education undersecretary for programs and projects
Dr. Ramon C. Bacani, undersecretary for regional operations
Dr. Nilo L. Rosas, former undersecretary for programs and projects who is now commissioner of the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).
According to Alidon, both Undersecretaries Labrador and Rosas rose from the ranks in the educational ladder starting as teachers, principals, supervisors, schools division superintendents, assistant regional directors, and finally regional directors for Ilocos (Region 1) and National Capital Region (NCR), respectively.
