MANILA, Philippines – What do Filipino parents want today for their children? Contrary to what some people may think, it’s not fame or fortune.
In a survey conducted by Julia Gabriel Centre for Learning (JGCL), a learning institution for children on Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City, parents showed they are still conservative as a strong character and good morals topped their wish list for their kids.
The top five concerns of parents today, according to the survey, are: character and moral foundation, education, creativity, social skills, and independence.
Most parents believe having a strong character and good morals can help their children grow up to be well-adjusted individuals.
Good quality education will help them develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of basic principles needed in their future career.
An appreciation for the cultural arts, on the other hand, can help mold their children’s creativity
Socialization is important, and social skills will help children get rid of their inhibitions and develop self-confidence. Playful activities in a preschool is an important first step in developing such social skills.
And independence is a desirable trait, one that will help their children make important decisions especially when they are faced with difficult situations.
The parents agree that these five points of interest need to be attended to while their children are still young. The foundation for these can be laid down in preschool.
Noreen G. Amancio, one of the parents who took part in the survey, revealed she was at first hesitant to enrol her child in preschool. However, upon reading from JGCL’s brochure that a child’s personality can be developed at a very young age, she decided to give it a try and never regretted her decision since. “At his early age, I make it a point to let him explore opportunities around him that could help develop his young mind,” said Amancio.
JGCL has taken note of the parents’ wish list. The school’s progressive program and teaching methods allow for the use of a variety of activities that are not only motivating, entertaining and fun, but are designed to help children become more open to learning and exploration.
“We encourage parents, instead of the yaya, to join their children in class in all our accompanied programs. That way, they can fully appreciate the importance of what we do and how they, as parents, can supplement our learning program,” said Josephine Reyes, JGCL head of centre.
