It’s a new tradition, the photo shoot. Though cameras had been around for the past 200 years, the cost of the film, developing and printing was prohibitive to many for a very long time.
Then, of course, for a very long time, portraits were always taken inside a studio. Natural lighting, which was hard to control was something both the photographer and the subject try to avoid, i.e. until Irving Penn who preferred to use all natural lights.
He brought that with him to Vogue Magazine when he started working there in 1943. The fashion photo shoots were never the same after that, including portraiture. Irving Penn pioneered a new way for editorial shoots, which in turn also pushed technology to where we are now.
It’s a big leap from Irving Penn to Allyn and Nina’s wedding. But, I thought a historical tidbit would be a good read. We all love Allyn and Nina and its just nice to share something that trivial just as this to make them smile for the cameras once more.
